    Hietasaarenkatu 1, 65100 Vaasa

    kesäinen kuva Kuntsin rannasta

From Vaasa market square, it is only a short walk to the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, which is in a beautiful spot by the sea in the Inner Harbour. The museum was named after art collector Consul Simo Kuntsi (1913–1984), and the art collection of the foundation established by him is considered one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in Finland. Donations and deposits, such as Lars Swanljung’s (b. 1944) collection of contemporary art, consolidate the importance of Vaasa in the art world.

The exhibition activities of the museum are based on changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art as well as on displays of the museum’s own art collections. The exhibitions at the Kuntsi museum are in-depth analyses of phenomena in contemporary art and topical issues providing substance for identity building and understanding the phenomena of our time.

The facilities at Kuntsi offer excellent scope for organizing various events. Cross-disciplinary art performances and events, in particular, in collaboration with the third sector and special groups of the public, are frequently organised.

  • Finland’s Library Museum

    Kirjastonkatu 13, Vaasa

    Suomen Kirjastomuseo

Finland’s first library was established in Vaasa already in 1794. The Library Museum provides a versatile picture of the history of the library with the help of artefacts, books and pictures. Historical book collections share the space with the museum’s alternating exhibitions.

The roots of Finland’s first library are in the Waasa Reading Library (Waasan Lukukirjasto), which was established by some members of the Vaasa court of appeal in 1794 for “their own amusement and to pass the time”. Other citizens were also allowed to use the library for a small fee. The library had a wide collection of books and maps as well as portraits and copper drawings. It is not likely, that the art items were lent, but the beginning of an art rental shop of a sorts was, however, there. The Reading Library operated until 1845, when the censorship regulations of the Russian rule forced it to close its doors. There are 30 works in the museum today, which remain from the original Reading Library.

After the Reading Library closed down the citizens of Vaasa were left without a library for five years. Lecturer Oskar Rancken stepped up, and the new library operated until the beginning of the 20th century. In the attic of the Palosaari library was discovered in the 1930s a collection of preserved tomes from the library in question. The tomes were bound in black leather backs, and therefore the collection has received the nickname “The Black Library”.

  • Makers' Gallery

    Kirkkopuistikko 18, Vaasa

  • Maritime museum of Vaasa

    Salmikatu 27, 65200 Vaasa

    vaasan merimuseo

Vaasa used to be an important shipping company and maritime city. In the Vaasa Maritime Museum are displayed local maritime traditions from the shipbuilding of the 19th century to the present day luxury yachts. Various fascinating objects, scale models, shipwrecks and photographs give a glimpse of the life of old time seafarers.

The Vaasa Maritime Museum is located on the shore of the Palosaari strait. The strait was for over 150 years the outport of Vaasa and the centre of shipbuilding. In the 19th century and early 20th century the shore was bordered with the shops and magazines of traders, and the museum is situated in one of these old salt magazines. Ship-owner Wolff had a salt magazine constructed in the middle of the 19th century and the building has been well preserved thanks to the conserving effect of salt. There are four original harbour magazines on the area altogether, one of which probably dates back to the late 18th century and has been relocated on the area from Old Vaasa.

  • Plater museum

    Merikaarrontie 5, Vähäkyrö

The Vähäkyrö plater tradition reaches far back in history and is widely known in Ostrobothnia. The old artisan traditions come alive in the Plater Museum. Here the visitor gets to see, how and with what kind of tools tin plate artefacts are made. With a little bit of luck, you can also see a genuine plater in his work.

The Vähäkyrö plater tradition extends all the way to the 18th century. The plater craft came to Finland from Germany in the beginning of the 18th century, soon after large tin pits had been discovered in England. In the parish of Vähäkyrö were 35 platers in the 1890s, and a few decades later there were already 100 of them. Most of them were crofters or farm labourers, who were tired of agricultural work. Still in the 1950s at least one railroad car loaded full of plater products left from the Tervajoki station every week.

  • Terranova

    Museokatu 3, Vaasa

Terranova is the name of the museum’s permanent natural science exhibition. Terranova is Latin for ‘new land’. In the Kvarken region the ´new´ land rises from the sea at a rate of 9 mm per year. Terranova was opened in 2002 in cooperation with the Ostrobothnian Museum, the Finnish Forest and Park Service Metsähallitus and the Ostrobothnia Australis Association.

Terranova presents nature in the Kvarken and Vaasa region from the Ice Age until the present day. Visitors can wonder at the land uplift phenomenon and its consequences, admire the beautiful Kvarken Archipelago and its fauna with all their senses. They can pat a ringed seal or touch rock that is billions of years old, dive beneath the surface in a virtual aquarium and watch nature films in the auditorium.

Terranova is also privileged to present a unique natural heritage site: The Kvarken Archipelago was entered in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2006 – the only natural site in Finland to be included so far. Together with the High Coast of Sweden, it forms a natural heritage site. The area was given the status of world heritage because post-glacial rebound is more visible here than anywhere else in the world. More information about the High Coast and the Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage is available at www.merenkurkku.fi and www.naturumhogakusten.se.

  • Wasa Graffitilandia

    Opistokatu 8, Vaasa

Wasa Graffitilandia is an exhibition with a focus on street art in Vaasa. In addition to graffiti and mural paintings, UV art and various installations are also displayed. Graffitilandia also has a shop with merchandise and spray cans, as well as an open painting wall for everyone. Many artists, both from Finland and abroad, have participated in the creation of Graffitilandia, including Bates and 1UP.

By bringing graffiti to galleries, those who don’t understand them are encouraged to pause and view them differently even on the streets. After a tour of the exhibition, many start to ponder aloud how it is possible to achieve such results with a spray can, and eventually realize that it’s not about vandalism but rather an art form that requires practice and technique.

Our exhibition is a tribute to graffiti and its creators and aims to correct the negative reputation associated with graffiti.
